RESOURCES

The Big Country Reentry Coalition acts as a liaison to enhance collaboration among reentry service providers, encouraging broad-based community support and involvement. Our six areas of emphasis are Employment, Housing, Mental Health, Treatment, Education, and Mentorship.

EMPLOYMENT

Securing sustainable second chance employment is top of the list of requirements for individuals on parole. Lack of employment can pose a myriad of insecurities leading people to recidivise just to have stability.

Employer list coming soon!

HOUSING

Halfway housing, family placements, and shared living/co-living communities can be hard to navigate and sometimes lead to repeat behaviors. Lack of safe housing in an area can lead to homelessness.

Safe Housing list is coming soon!

MENTAL HEALTH

Many individuals receive limited mental health care while incarcerated and are not set up with a primary care physician upon release, which leads to undiagnosed and untreated issues. A persons mental health is one of the building blocks of basic needs.

In the Abilene area, the local mental health authority is Betty Hardwick Center.

TREATMENT

Drug and alcohol addictions are commonly misrepresented in the justice system. A drug charge will label someone a "felon" or as "dangerous" when really they are in need of substance use disorder counseling or supports.

Betty Hardwick offers an intensive outpatient treatment option. Contact: SUD-IOP@bettyhardwick.org

EDUCATION

If charged and jailed at a young age, completing high school might not be an option. Low literacy levels are common among those released from jail/prison and having a diploma, GED or college hours can make or break someone's employment search.

MENTORSHIP

Who do you turn to when you have a question?  Those on the journey of reentry often have several. A good mentor is willing to take their personal lessons learned, and share them with their mentee, to advise based on their own lived experiences.
